Usability Study of CT Scan Annotation Tool

This project aims to conduct a usability study and provide UI recommendations to improve the toolbar of an annotation tool used for marking and measuring findings in CT scans. The goal is to design an intuitive, easy-to-use set of UI controls that enable radiologists to efficiently annotate CT scan findings.

We evaluated how radiologists interact with the toolbar and suggested design enhancements that simplify key tasks such as drawing, measuring, and labeling anatomical structures. The project was designed using Sketch.

Website Redesign Process

In the CuraCloud website redesign project, the team focused on improving the user experience through a structured process that included brainstorming, ideation, and the reorganization of the website structure. During the brainstorming phase, various user pain points and potential solutions were identified, leading to an ideation stage where creative design elements were explored. The site’s structure was then overhauled to enhance navigation, making key features more accessible across devices. By refining the layout and simplifying content flow, the redesign aimed to increase usability and better support user engagement.

Managing Negative Emotions on Digital Wearables

This project explores the potential of digital wearables to help users recognize and manage negative emotions, specifically focusing on anger. Through user research and testing, the goal was to design a wearable prototype that monitors emotional states and provides calming tools.

Key research questions focused on how technology can help people recognize anger and offer solutions for managing it. Based on surveys and interviews, personas and scenarios were developed to guide the design.

The prototype features heart rate measurement, mood tracking, synchronization with mobile devices, and calming resources like music and tips.

The usability of the prototype was tested through 5 sessions, resulting in revisions to 3 core features for improved user experience.

Surveillance Window Application (SWAP)

Web Tool Usability Study

This project focused on evaluating the usability of SWAP, a web-based tool designed to provide public health professionals with data on historical disease outbreaks. SWAP helps analysts compare current events with past outbreaks using a comprehensive library of 22 diseases and 500 global events.

1. Goal
To conduct a usability evaluation of SWAP, identifying ways to improve navigation, terminology, and ease of use for public health professionals, epidemiologists, and data analysts.

2. Methods

  • Interviews with 6 participants in public health or epidemiology.
  • 45-60 minute sessions using a usability test kit.
  • Participants performed 7 tasks, tracked via screen recording.

3. Participant Characteristics

  • Age: 20+
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or a related field
  • Experience with data analysis
  • Studies/employed/previously employed in the field of public health or epidemiology and/or with medical training
  • Moderate computer proficiency

4. Data Collected

  • Quantitative: Task completion rate, System Usability Scale (SUS), semantic differentials.
  • Qualitative: First impressions, terminology feedback, user suggestions, overall site usefulness.

5. Outcome
Recommendations to enhance SWAP’s usability and support better access to epidemiological data for its users.

Tableau Data Visualization for College Admissions

How an interactive data visualization of educational data can help college admissions counselors recruit and counsel effectively prospective students?

 

Abstract

College admissions counselors rely on demographic, academic, and socioeconomic data to recruit and advise prospective students. We hypothesized that interactive data visualizations could enhance their daily tasks. Using Tableau, we visualized a subset of the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), focusing on students’ future plans and preferences for postsecondary institutions. This visualization provides insights into issues important to students from diverse backgrounds, helping counselors tailor recruitment strategies.

Design Question

How can data help college admissions counselors more effectively recruit and counsel prospective students?

Target Users

College admissions officers recruiting domestically in the United States.

Interviews and Personas

We interviewed four college admissions counselors to understand their data usage. From these insights, we created three personas—Cameron (application evaluator), Jackie, and Kendra (recruiters). The interviews revealed how counselors rely on academic and socioeconomic data to identify and attract potential students.

Data

We used the HSLS:09 dataset, which contains demographic, socioeconomic, and academic data on 23,000 ninth graders from 944 schools starting in 2009. Our analysis extracted 30 variables, including family income, parents’ education, GPA, and school characteristics.

Ideation (Sketches)

Our prototypes explored student demographics, needs, and academic factors, with sketches visualizing data on income, institutional offerings, GPA, and gender. These visualizations aimed to help admissions teams better understand and address the diverse needs of prospective students.

Usability Study and UI Recommendations for CT Scan Annotation Tool

The goal of this project is to enhance the User Interface (UI) of the iPedal mobile application, focusing on improving the user experience by providing clear, real-time information about the condition of bikes available for rent.

The improved UI will include intuitive design elements that allow users to quickly assess bike condition at a glance, such as visual indicators (e.g., color-coded icons) for maintenance status, battery levels for electric bikes, and recent usage history. By incorporating these features seamlessly into the bike selection process, users will be able to make more informed decisions about which bike to rent, resulting in greater satisfaction and a smoother overall experience.

Providence Employee Portal Redesign

This project focused on redesigning the UI patterns of Providence’s employee portal to improve both internal and external access to online tools and resources. Usability testing revealed navigation, structure, and performance issues across desktop and mobile devices. Using Sketch, a high-fidelity, Bootstrap-compatible prototype was developed with key enhancements:

  • Updated header design
  • Redesigned main navigation for tablet and mobile devices
  • Enhanced visibility of frequently visited resource links
  • Simplified, compact design for additional tools and resources
